The Scorpion Rock
³» ¿ë
Scorpions are dangerous creatures with poisonous stingers and sharp pincers. Recently, Robert Gess, a researcher at Wits University discovered a fossilized scorpion. Gess came across the fossil and tested it to see how old it was. The fossilized scorpion is 350 million years old! This scorpion lived in Gondwana, an ancient continent which was made up of Africa, South America, and Australia, a long time ago. The scorpion is the oldest land creature ever found on Gondwana. The fossil was found near modern-day Grahamstown in South Africa.Scientists estimate that the scorpion was 10 to 15 cm long. The scorpion is important because it proves that life was evolving in Gondwana 350 million years ago. The scorpion is a clue as to how dinosaurs and, later, humans evolved!
