Elementary School Textbooks
³» ¿ë
They are actually very helpful to children. However, teachers say some of the illustrations contain gender discriminative contents. On January 11, professors from Seoul National University of Education and teachers from Euncheon Elementary School reported gender discrimination in elementary school textbooks. They examined the textbooks for 10 subjects taught from 3rd grade to 6th grade. According to the results, men appear about 30 percent more often than women in textbook illustrations. Moreover, men are described as playing more important and active roles than women. On the other hand, many textbooks describe women as passive with their main tasks being family care and household chores. Social Studies textbooks were found to contain the largest number of gender discriminative illustrations, where men appear almost twice as often as women..
