Call Me By My Name!
³» ¿ë
Researchers from the University of St Andrews recently found that bottlenose dolphins call each other by name. They use unique whistles to call one another. The research found that when dolphins are separated, they produce signature sounds to call out each other. Each dolphin recognizes whether the sound is for them or not, and react to it.In other words, the whistle sound plays a role as a name of the dolphins. In addition, since the distinctive sound is used very often, dolphins in the same group are very familiar with the sound and are able to mimic that sound. In an experiment conducted by the University of St Andrews, mother dolphins that were separated from their calves copied the calves¡¯ whistle sounds to join them. Then, the offspring came to their mothers.Dolphins are the only animals that use sounds to call each other like human beings.
