J. K. Rowling was born on July 31, 1965 in England. She was a quiet and shy girl who likes reading and writing. She started writing fantasy stories when she was 5 years old. She studied French at Exter University, and went to Paris to study for a year. She later moved to London to work as a researcher and bilingual secretary for Amnesty International.

Rowling began to write Harry Potter in 1990, and at the end of the same year, her mother died after a ten-year battle with disease. She said her mother's death heavily affected her writing. She moved to Portugal to teach English in 1991. Every morning, she kept writing a story about a wizard. Rowling met a Portuguese television journalist and they got married. However, they were separated shortly after their daughter was born. After the separation from her husband, Rowling quit her teaching job in Portugal.

Rowling and her daughter moved to Scotland to live near her sister. During this period, she was diagnosed with depression. She was so poor that she survived on state welfare support. In 1995, she finally finished her first book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The book was submitted to twelve publishing companies, but rejected by them all. Fortunately, a year later, an editor from a small British publishing company decided to publish her book. Finally, the book was published in 1997 and has been loved by millions of people all over the world.
