Pablo Picasso
Æĺí·Î ÇÇÄ«¼Ò (Pablo Picasso, 1881~1973)
Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter and sculptor. He is regarded as one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. Picasso was very inventive, and his unique style of painting made him very famous as an innovator.

Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 in Malaga, Spain. His father was a painter who specialized in naturalistic depictions. He recognized his son¡¯s gift and passion for drawing from an early age. Picasso studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts where his father was teaching. In 1895, his family moved to Barcelona, where he studied fine arts. He later decided to send Picasso to Madrid¡¯s Royal Academy of San Fernando, the country¡¯s best art school. Picasso¡¯s first exhibition took place in Barcelona in 1900. In the fall of 1900, he went to Paris and later settled there. As a highly productive artist, he created a large number of works during his lifetime. Besides painting, he made sculptures, etchings, and prints.

He experimented with a number of modern artistic styles throughout his career. Above all, from 1909, Picasso developed Cubism, together with Georges Braque. In cubist artworks, objects are broken up, analyzed, and re-assembled in an abstracted form. He was one of the leading cubists in those days. Les Demoiselles d¡¯Avignon and Guernica are considered to be his most well-known paintings. By the end of World War II, Picasso became well-known as a world-famous artist. In 1961, he married Jacqueline Roque. Picasso continued his work in painting, drawing, prints, ceramics and sculpture.

Picasso died on April 8, 1973. He worked as an artist for about 70 years, and was a major contributor to modern art. Picasso¡¯s works are in many major museums around the world including the Louvre in Paris.
