Mother Teresa
Å×·¹»ç ¼ö³à (Mother Teresa, 1910~1997)
Mother Teresa was a Catholic nun who founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India in 1950. For over 45 years, she served the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying in India and other countries. After her death, she was given the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta by Pope John Paul II.

Mother Teresa was born on August 27, 1910 in the Ottoman Empire (now Macedonia). Her father died when she was eight years old. Her mother raised her as a Roman Catholic. When she was young, Agnes was fascinated by stories of the lives of missionaries and their services. At the age of 12, she felt the call of God strongly while praying. So, she decided to spread the love of Christ. Agnes left home and went to Loreto Abbey in Ireland to learn English. She went to India in 1929, and later taught at a school. She took her first religious vows as a nun when she chose to be named Teresa.

Mother Teresa taught history and geography at St. Mary¡¯s High School in Calcutta. While she was teaching in Calcutta, the poverty in the city had a deep impact on her mind. So, she decided to help the poor instead of teaching students at school. She started an open-air school for poor children. Also, she took care of homeless people.

Mother Teresa started the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. The main task of the group was to take care of homeless people. Soon, many people all over the world were moved by Mother Teresa¡¯s noble spirit and started supporting her by sending clothes, money and food. The group actively helps the poor in many countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Even though Mother Teresa became old and weak, she never stopped her work. Countless people received her merciful care for more than 50 years.

On September 5, 1997, after finishing her dinner and prayers, Mother Teresa went back to God. The Indian Government granted her a state funeral in honor of her service to the poor of all religions in India. Her selfless love touched the hearts of millions of people all over the world. Mother Teresa¡¯s work has been recognized and praised throughout the world. She received a number of rewards including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her noble devotion.
