Napoléon Bonaparte
³ªÆú·¹¿Ë º¸³ªÆĸ£Æ® (Napoléon Bonaparte, 1769~1821)
Napoleon Bonaparte was an emperor, military and political leader of France. He is famous for his military successes.

Napoleon Bonaparte was born in 1769 in Corsica, Italy. His father was a member of a noble Italian family. At age 10, Napoleon and his older brother Joseph were sent to French military school. While he was at school, his school mates made fun of him because his social status was low and he did not speak French well. He was very small, so he got the nickname "Little Corporal". Napoleon received an excellent education at the school. By 1785, Napoleon became a second lieutenant in the French army. He focused on his career in the army. The French Revolution(1789~1793), a movement to overthrow King Louis XVI, had begun. During this period, the French Republic was established. Bonaparte rose to prominence under the French First Republic. Napoleon became famous and won a promotion by helping defeat the British at Toulon.

In 1799, he staged a coup d'état and installed himself as First Consul; five years later, the French Senate proclaimed him emperor. In the early 19th century, the French Empire under Napoleon engaged in a series of the Napoleonic Wars involving every major European power. Napoleon led his armies to victory after victory. By 1807, France ruled territory that stretched from Portugal to Italy, and Napoleon once attempted to conquer the rest of Europe. However, a defeat in Moscow in 1812 nearly destroyed his empire. In 1814, he was deposed and exiled to the island of Elba. The next year, he returned to Paris and seized power again, but this success did not last long. In 1815, the French army lost to the Duke of Wellington of England at the Battle of Waterloo. Because of that loss, Napoleon was finished for good.

Napoleon was sent into exile on the island of St. Helena in 1815, and after 6 years, he died. Historical evaluation of Napoleon is still controversial. However, many people admire him for his passion and strong will to achieve his goals in almost impossible circumstances.
